AI Literacy for Middle School Students and Up

StudioWeb is developing a new AI literacy curriculum for middle school students and above, along with an accompanying Professional Development program for educators. 

StudioWeb AI Principles is being developed by StudioWeb founder Stefan Mischook, a software developer, technology educator, published author, and curriculum creator with decades of industry experience. Over the past 16 years, StudioWeb has provided technology education to schools and districts, while Mischook’s educational technology content has generated more than 35 million online video views.

Rather than teaching specific AI products that may quickly become outdated, StudioWeb AI Principles focuses on the enduring concepts and skills students need to understand, evaluate, and work effectively with AI. The curriculum covers how AI and large language models work, effective AI communication and problem solving, verification and critical thinking, responsible AI use, and how AI is changing education, careers, creativity, technology, and the workplace.

Key areas of the student curriculum include:

• AI fundamentals — models, LLMs, context, hallucinations, and how AI generates answers
• Working with AI — prompting, context, problem decomposition, iteration, and human-AI collaboration
• Responsible AI — privacy, bias, misinformation, deepfakes, academic integrity, fact-checking, and digital citizenship
• The AI ecosystem — cloud and local AI, multimodal AI, specialized models, agents, and AI workflows
• Real-world AI — learning, research, writing, creativity, software development, business, and careers
• Assessment & certificates of completion — interactive quizzes, randomized assessments, progress tracking, and certificates of completion

The program is being designed specifically for K–12 educational environments, with attention to student privacy, data minimization, FERPA- and COPPA-aware practices, accessibility considerations, age-appropriate instruction, measurable learning outcomes, and alignment with emerging AI-literacy and digital-citizenship frameworks. Teachers remain in control of their classroom and student information through the StudioWeb Teacher Control Panel, including the ability to view, modify, and remove student information or entire classrooms. An accompanying Teacher PD program will cover the same AI foundations plus classroom AI policies, academic integrity, evaluating AI-assisted work, student privacy and safety, and practical use of AI by educators.
